At 39 years old, she is not just a survivor but also a mother to her precious rainbow baby, Nazareli. Kari and her husband endured fifteen long and heartbreaking years, grappling with infertility and experiencing the pain of multiple miscarriages, including two ectopic pregnancies that resulted in the loss of her fallopian tubes. Undeterred, she forged ahead, determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother. Through hard work and determination, Kari embarked on a journey to raise funds for IVF, working a full-time job, engaging in door-to-door delivery, and even starting a baking business. Their efforts led them to Mexico, where on October 20th, 2021, three embryos were implanted in Kari’s uterus. Little did she know, this would be the turning point in her life.
With joy and amazement, Kari discovered that she was pregnant, as two dark lines appeared on a home pregnancy test on October 31st, 2021. Her heart filled with a mix of emotions as she realized that her dream was finally coming true. However, amidst the joy of her pregnancy, Kari’s world would soon be shaken to its core.
During a routine checkup, Kari mentioned an unusual lump she had discovered in her right breast. An evaluation and subsequent mammogram led to a shocking diagnosis on April 7th, 2022. Kari recalls the moment her world came crashing down, saying, “A nurse looked at me and said in a stern voice, ‘Kari, we have discovered stage 2 Breast Cancer.’ In a matter of seconds, my world came crashing down.” The fear of losing her life before meeting her unborn child gripped her, but Kari’s unwavering faith would become her guiding light.
Determined to fight for her life and her baby, Kari embarked on a challenging journey of chemotherapy, braving the intimidating sessions with strength and resilience. Throughout her treatment, she faced multiple appointments and monitoring, navigating the complexities of being a new mother and a cancer patient simultaneously. Despite encountering complications like severe preeclampsia, Kari’s baby girl arrived prematurely but healthy, filling her heart with immeasurable joy.
As Kari continued her chemotherapy routine and underwent a lumpectomy, she received biopsy results that indicated a trace of cancer still remained. Faced with the reality of her situation, she made the courageous decision to undergo a bilateral mastectomy, determined to prevent a recurrence and safeguard her future.
However, amidst the physical and emotional turmoil, Kari found herself facing financial hardship. The burden of medical bills and the inability to work left her feeling helpless.
